Daughters of the American Revolution Again Offering "Liberty Camp"

A popular history camp is happening again in late summer, and Kevin Coleman spoke to a coordinator of it.

The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is offering the 2023 "Liberty Camp" for children ages 9 to 12.

Coordinator Terressa Reep says kids get a snack and experience colonial crafts and games, as well as learn history in stations - but the children are never just listening, they are getting hands-on education.

Reep says participating kids also get several colonial keepsakes, as well as a copy of the U.S. Constitution. They also earn gold coins...which King George tries to take, but the kids always get them back. The play coins can be used in the camp's store.

She says this year, the camp is ramped up because December will be the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party (en route to the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution). Last year the camp had a replica of a ship that was in Boston Harbor for the event, and this year they are adding a mast to it.

"Liberty Camp" is only $25 per child, but scholarships are available. It will be 6 to 9pm each day, July 31st to August 4th, at Chillicothe's First Presbyterian Church at 13 Mead Drive, off Belleview Avenue.

Reep says the camp has no religious or political affiliation, and is purely about history.

There are a few spots available, so she says to make reservations soon by emailing Reep at reepterressa@yahoo.com, or messaging through the D.A.R.'s or Liberty Camp's Facebook pages.
