OHSAA Suspends School vs School Contests For "Contact Sports"

The Ohio High School Athletic Association says golf, tennis and volleyball scrimmages are permitted as their official practice seasons begin August 1st. Football, field hockey, soccer & cross country practices will also start August 1st, but school vs school scrimmages are suspended until further notice for these "contact sports".

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine says they still do not have guidelines for high school contact sports, but says they should be coming soon. DeWine commented Tuesday, that there is still concern as to the direction the COVID-19 virus will take in coming weeks, which makes it more difficult for "contact sports" to be played. Many cross country fans have been lighting up social media with the question of how their sport is considered a contact sport. No explanation has been given to that ruling as of this time.

The Kentucky High School Football Coaches Association Board of Control has voted to delay the start of high school football regular season games until September 11th, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Guidelines have been released by the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission that will be required or recommended for coaches in order to safely have fall sports this year. One guideline would have football sidelines extended 20 more yards to maintain social distancing between coaches and players.
