4-Year-old Dies of Injuries Sustained in Pickaway Police Pursuit Crash

One of the two children inside a car that crashed during a Sunday police pursuit in Pickaway County has died.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says Rojer Lemus, 4, died at Nationwide Children’s Hospital on Monday.

Lemus and another 3-year-old child, Caissen Cruz, were inside a vehicle operated by Yoni Cruz Martinez, 35, of Columbus, when it crashed around 7:45 p.m. Sunday on Route 762 in Pickaway County's Scioto Township while fleeing from police.

Martinez had been reported by another motorist as driving erratically. A South Bloomfield Police Officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but Martinez sped away reaching speeds of more than 110 mph before losing control and crashing.

Authorities say they don’t yet know the children’s relationship to each other or to Martinez, who also died as a result of that crash.
