Mike Pence Vows US Embassy Will Move To Jerusalem In 2019

Vice President Mike Pence told Israeli lawmakers that the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem will open ahead of schedule. In a speech to Israel's Knesset, Pence promised "the United States embassy will open before the end of next year," reports Politico

He said that "recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital....is the only true foundation for a just and lasting peace."

By finally recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the United States has chosen fact over fiction — and fact is the only true foundation for a just and lasting peace

Pence called on Israel and Palestine to resume peace negotiations. He said Palestinian leadership must "return to the table," and negotiate an end to the violence between the two countries. He told lawmakers that "peace can only come through dialogue."

The Vice President also spoke about the growing tensions over Iran's nuclear program. Fox News reports he said the U.S. will withdrawal from the nuclear deal and promised that Iran would never obtain nuclear weapons.

As Pence began his speech, Arab lawmakers began loudly protesting and unfurled signs declaring Jerusalem the capital of Palestine. As they were removed from the legislature, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, along with other lawmakers, stood and applauded.

President Trump set-off a firestorm in December when he declared the United States will recognize that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. The announcement was condemned by leaders across the world, and the United Nations voted to condemn the decision.
